Opening of frequency channel 5 for UWB applications in Israel

UWB, or ultra-wideband technology, uses very high frequency bands with a bandwidth of at least 500 MHz and is intended for short-range radio communications.

For a the approval of a product making use of ultra-wideband technology,  a target’s nation’s regulatory approval is necessary. Individual countries have different definitions of the respective approval systems.

For Israel, channels 1, 2, 6, 7 and 9 have been previously utilized. From now onward, UWB applications can likewise be approved in channel 5 (bandwidth for radio applications above 500 MHz), which was previously rather uninteresting for Europe under the name “Canada channel”.

No FCC / ISED test report will be accepted for this approval. Customers need EN test reports for the approval of their UWB product in channel 5.

On the part of UWB Allicance, there is also a desire to harmonize channel 9 – currently known as the Japan channel – worldwide.
